Signs in the heavens and the Groaning Earth: What Are We Watching?

olar Cycle 25 and the groaning earth have given us two very different kinds of headlines in 2026: the Sun has remained unusually active after a stronger-than-expected solar maximum, while powerful earthquakes have shaken communities from Venezuela to the waters near Cuba. The question is not whether these events happened. They did. The question is what they mean.

We need to move carefully here. Scripture gives us a prophetic framework, but it does not give us permission to turn every unusual headline into a date prediction. Jesus said plainly, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man” (Matthew 24:36). No charts. No secret calendar. No dramatic countdown clock taped to the refrigerator.

Still, watching is not the same as guessing.

Solar Cycle 25 Surpassed the Early Forecasts

The Sun follows an approximately eleven-year cycle of rising and falling magnetic activity. During the active phase, sunspots increase, solar flares become more frequent, and eruptions from the Sun can disturb radio communications, satellites, navigation systems, and electrical infrastructure on Earth. This solar activity was surely signs in the heavens or what it?

Solar Cycle 25 reached its maximum phase in 2024. NASA and NOAA reported that the Sun had entered the maximum period of its cycle, a phase that could continue for roughly another year or more. The cycle then became more interesting than the original 2019 forecast suggested.

According to the Solar Influences Data Analysis Center, the smoothed monthly sunspot number reached 161 in October 2024. The 2019 Solar Cycle Prediction Panel had expected a maximum in the range of 105 to 125. That does not make Solar Cycle 25 supernatural. It does mean the early forecast was too low.

That distinction matters. A prediction being wrong does not prove an apocalyptic interpretation. It does show that even sophisticated scientific models have limits. The Sun is not a tidy little clock on the wall. It is a vast magnetic engine, and occasionally it reminds us that our confidence can run ahead of our understanding.

NASA also documented a strong solar flare peaking at 1:09 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 18, 2026. The NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory report describes the flare as a powerful burst of energy captured across multiple extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths.

That is genuine activity in the heavens. It is measurable, observable, and significant for space-weather forecasting.

But is it a direct fulfillment of a specific prophecy? We should not claim more than Scripture says.

Luke 21:11 Places Earthquakes and Signs in the Heavens Together

Jesus gave this warning while teaching about the future:

“And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven” (Luke 21:11, KJV).

The verse contains both categories we are examining: great earthquakes in different places and signs from heaven. That connection is biblical. The application to any particular solar flare or earthquake cluster requires discernment.

Jesus did not say that every solar flare would be a coded announcement of the Tribulation. He did say that fearful sights and great signs would appear from heaven. He also said that earthquakes would occur in diverse places. The language is broad enough to describe a pattern, not narrow enough to identify a single event by name.

That is why the most responsible argument is not, “Solar Cycle 25 caused the Venezuelan earthquake.” We have no established scientific evidence proving that solar flares directly trigger tectonic earthquakes. The honest argument is that unusual activity in the heavens and serious shaking on the earth are appearing together within the wider environment Jesus told us to watch.

The 2026 Earthquake Clusters Were Real, but the Statistics Matter

On June 8, 2026, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck approximately 104 kilometers west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba. The U.S. Geological Survey event page records the event, which was felt in parts of Florida and Cuba.

Then, on June 24, two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela in rapid succession. The USGS recorded a magnitude 7.2 event followed approximately 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake near Yumare. The USGS event page documented the magnitude 7.5 earthquake, while contemporary reporting from the BBC described collapsed buildings, rescue operations, and at least 235 deaths and more than 4,300 injuries in the early reporting.

Those numbers can change as rescue teams reach damaged areas and authorities reconcile reports. We should not repeat an unverified death toll as though it were carved into stone.

The Venezuela earthquakes were devastating. They were also scientifically interesting because the two large events occurred close together in time and location. That is commonly described as a seismic doublet: two earthquakes of similar magnitude occurring in close succession.

Around the same period, earthquakes in other parts of the world received attention because they occurred within hours of one another. The Anadolu Agency’s explainer reported that seismologists generally regarded the timing as statistical coincidence rather than proof of a global physical connection.

That is the secular explanation. It deserves to be heard.

The USGS explains that the world experiences temporary fluctuations in earthquake activity and that improved instruments now detect far more smaller earthquakes. For earthquakes of magnitude 7 and above, the long-term average is approximately 16 major earthquakes per year. The agency specifically warns that a temporary increase does not mean a larger earthquake is imminent.

That is not an inconvenient footnote. It is part of the evidence.

“The Whole Creation Groaneth” Is More Than a News Headline

Paul writes:

“For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now” (Romans 8:22, KJV).

Paul is not presenting a seismology textbook. He is describing a creation subjected to corruption, decay, death, and frustration because of sin. The earth is not operating in the final, healed condition promised by God.

The word picture is striking: labor pains. The groaning is real, but it is not the end of the story. Birth pains point toward a delivery. The suffering of creation points toward the day when God will make all things new.

That gives us a better framework for the 2026 seismic clusters. We do not need to inflate ordinary statistics to make the Bible sound relevant. The earth already shakes. People already suffer. Creation is visibly fragile. We are reminded, again and again, that the world we inhabit is not secure enough to save us.

The prophet Isaiah described a similar global unraveling:

“The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant” (Isaiah 24:4–5, KJV).

The Bible’s explanation is moral and spiritual, not merely geological. Creation groans because the world is broken—and humanity’s deepest problem is not that the ground moves beneath our feet. It is that our hearts remain estranged from God.

Solar Flares Are Not Proof of Earthquake Causation

Here is where prophecy commentary can go off the rails.

Solar flares can affect Earth’s upper atmosphere and space-weather environment. They can disrupt radio communications, increase satellite drag, and create risks for electrical systems. But the evidence supplied here does not establish that the January solar flare caused the June earthquakes, or that Solar Cycle 25 is physically driving a global seismic increase.

We should resist that claim.

The stronger prophetic observation is convergence. The Sun is active. The earth is shaking. Human beings are watching the events unfold globally in real time. That combination deserves attention even when the mechanisms are different.

Jesus did not tell us to manufacture a causal link where one has not been proven. He told us to watch.

The Modern Information System Makes the Groaning Impossible to Ignore

A farmer in the nineteenth century could experience a devastating earthquake and never know that an earthquake had occurred on another continent that same day. Today, seismic sensors, satellites, smartphones, 24-hour news, and social media place distant disasters in front of us within minutes.

That does not mean every generation before ours lacked earthquakes. It means we are the first generation able to observe the global pattern as it develops.

When earthquakes displace people, governments and aid organizations need systems for identity verification, shelter allocation, financial assistance, medical records, and emergency communications. Those systems can save lives. They can also normalize centralized monitoring.

The technology is not automatically the mark of the beast. Revelation 13:16–17 describes a future system in which buying and selling are controlled through allegiance to the beast. We should not label every digital identity, biometric database, or emergency payment card as that final system.

But we should understand the direction of travel.

Crisis creates demand for coordination. Coordination creates infrastructure. Infrastructure can be used for mercy—or control. Scripture tells us where the final form of that control leads, even if we cannot identify the exact hardware or software ahead of time.

That is why the current-events argument rests on convergence rather than exaggeration. We are watching signs in the heavens, a groaning earth, expanding digital systems, moral confusion, global interdependence, and instant worldwide communication develop in the same historical window.

No single item proves the whole case. Together, they form a pattern worth sober attention.

We Are Watching Birth Pangs, Not Setting Dates

Jesus described the early signs as “the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:8, KJV). The phrase carries the image of labor pains: recurring, painful, and intensifying as the moment approaches.

We must be careful with that image. Birth pains do not tell us the exact minute of delivery. They tell us that something is underway.

The same principle applies here. Solar Cycle 25 does not give us a date for the Rapture. The 2026 earthquake clusters do not give us a date for the Tribulation. USGS averages do not cancel the biblical warning, and biblical warnings do not authorize us to ignore the data.

The reading I hold is pre-tribulation and premillennial: the Rapture of the Church is the next imminent event, before the seven-year Tribulation. I believe the language of being “caught up” in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, the promise that believers are not appointed to wrath in 1 Thessalonians 5:9, and the structure of Revelation support that position.

Other faithful, serious students of Scripture read these passages differently. Historic premillennialists and post-tribulationists interpret the silence about the church after Revelation 3 and the meaning of wrath in different ways. We should study these things rather than simply borrow somebody else’s certainty. As Paul wrote, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God” (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV).

But whichever position a person takes on the timing of prophetic events, the gospel question remains.

The earth groans because creation is broken. We groan because death still touches every family. The answer is not better forecasting, stronger buildings, or more sophisticated tracking systems—though all of those can be useful. The answer is Jesus Christ.

He came into the broken world, died for sinners, and rose again. Salvation is not earned by watching enough prophecy videos or identifying enough signs. It is received by grace through faith in Him.

If these events stir something in you, good. That is the right response—not panic, but repentance. Not speculation, but faith.
